Preparation

The facilitator leads the group through the protocol, reading and then carrying out each point, one after the other.

Process

Participants form a circle.

  • Pass on the Haia:

    • The facilitator makes a lively gesture with the left hand, diagonally from top left to bottom right, as if cutting something, energetically pronouncing “Haia!”.

    • The person to the right of the facilitator does the same.

    • Turn the Haia counter-clockwise in turn.

    • Perform one or two initial circles to get used to the gesture and speed up the rhythm.

  • Copy and alter the Haia:

    • Change the direction of transmission at any time, if desired.

    • Copy and slightly increase or alter a perceived aspect of the way the “Haia” was transmitted by the previous person. This may be by increasing the gesture, the way of saying “Haia”, the energy, the intensity, etc., but never in a mocking or caricatured way.

    • Continue the process, each person transmitting the Haia adding their own variation.

  • Follow the rhythm and double the Haia:

    • Establish a common rhythm, with tempos varying from very fast to very slow, to encourage spontaneous copying and alteration, and create a flow that's pleasant to observe and follow.

    • If the group is large enough (20 people or more), add a second “Haia” in parallel with the first, so that they can pass, catch up or even overtake each other.

Notes

Made during a workshop at the FC, Lausanne (2022), the “Haia” turned into a funny, fine, noisy, silent, poetic and beautiful dance.
