Process
Clearly state the question (the issue, the problem to be solved, the solution to be found) at the start of the session. The question can evolve or be reformulated along the way.
Each person wishing to speak raises her hand to take the floor, without interrupting those who are speaking (see Non-verbal Communication tool).
React to each person's interventions and ideas by applying the basic rule of theatrical improvisation: say “YES, AND” rather than “no, but”.
Consider that no idea is bad, even if you think it is, to allow for twists and turns.
The solution found doesn't belong to anyone, but to the group as a whole.
There's no time limit: the decision to stop is taken collectively.
Everything said is confidential, and no information can be used against anyone.
Close computers and telephones.
Create a space free of sarcasm and sophistry.
Notes
When it works, the result can be magical, starting with a weak initial idea and ending up with a solution that's unexpected, brilliant and created by all.
To encourage everyone to speak, a personal countdown of speaking time can be set up, or use the raised fingers of non-verbal communication.
The protocol also deconstructs the egos often at work in invention and creation. Every word counts as a part of the collective brain.
